22nd Annual Val Matteotti Italian Open raises over $80,000!

We are proud to share that this year's Val Matteotti Italian Open raised over $80,000!

Many thanks to all of the Val Matteotti Italian Open sponsors, supporters and participants. Since its inception 22 years ago, this premiere golf tournament has raised more than $1,480,000 for the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation. All funds raised at the Val Matteotti Italian Open stay right here at the Chinook Regional Hospital and will be used to fund state-of-the-art healthcare equipment, vital programs and special projects.

 

Care From The Heart Radio-a-thon

Our 8th Annual Radiothon took place in the Atrium of the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, February 16, 2017. From 7am until 6pm, our six local radio stations aligned forces with the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation to raise over $234,000. Throughout the day they chattd on air with doctors, nurses, administrators of the hospital, and patients to share personal stories of the impact that donations made to the CRH Foundation have in our community.

Friendly robot eases fears, pain on pediatric unit

LETHBRIDGE — A small robot named Chip is proving a big hit with young patients, easing their anxiety and reducing their pain during procedures at Chinook Regional Hospital.
 
The two-foot-tall, 11-lb. robot – purchased through an $18,000 contribution from the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation’s pediatric fund – can play soccer, give a high-five, tell a story and provide comfort. Controlled by a tablet-based application, Chip can also address children by their names, blink his eyes and follow conversations.

Update on the current redevelopment projects at the Chinook Regional Hospital
March 12, 2014

Phase one of the Emergency Room development has begun. This is the first renovation for the Emergency Department since the Chinook Regional Hospital was built 25 years ago.

The new space will see the addition of seven more treatment beds, and will have 12 acute treatment rooms, eight rapid assessment rooms and two psychiatric secure rooms.  There will also be the addition of two specialized treatment rooms for eye injuries and gynecology.

The Chinook Regional Hospital Emergency sees just over 52,000 patients annually.

The annual Val Matteotti Italian Open hit a major milestone in 2012. The Italian Open has now contributed more than $1.15 million dollars to the Chinook Regional Hospital. The effect of this money has been felt throughout the hospital and has certainly gone great lengths in supporting the healthcare of our community.

The 13th Annual Back to Back Wool Challenge will be held Saturday May 11th at the Centre Village Mall. The event begins at 9 a.m.  The shear off will begin at 9:30 a.m.  All proceeds raised will be donated to the Chinook Regional Hospital Breast Health Program. The winner of this international event must shear, spin, and knit a sweater in the fastest time possible. Local newborns can breathe easier thanks to donation from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation

Staff at Chinook Regional Hospital have more tools for treating newborns, especially those born prematurely, who require help to breathe.

A $50,000 grant from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, obtained through the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, has been used to purchase 33 new infant resuscitators, as well as two pediatric human patient simulators to assist with staff training.

Expansion to Day Procedures begins at the Chinook Regional Hospital

Construction of the new Day Procedures unit at Chinook Regional Hospital (CRH) will started this Friday with a different take on the “sod-turning” ceremony.

With no actual sod to turn, Day Procedures staff and physicians will joined South Zone leaders Dr. Vanessa Maclean, Dr. Eric Mueller, Teri Myhre and Grant Walker; and local MLAs Greg Weadick and Bridget Pastoor; to knock down a wall in the former Cancer Centre.

The “wall-bashing” marks the beginning of a multi-million dollar renovation combining Day Procedures with the former Cancer Centre. The former Cancer Centre has been vacant since the Jack Ady Cancer Centre opened in 2010.

Lethbridge Regional Police Service challenge the Legends of Hockey for charity.

Another successful Oldtimers Hockey Challenge was held Monday, November 15 at the Nicholas Sheran Ice Centre. The Lethbridge Regional Police Service challenged the Legends in a fun filled game of sticks, all in the name of charity. The Lethbridge Regional Police Service will present the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation a cheque with an amount similar to those they have donated in the past. The total of their donations over the years has been more than $71,000.00. Playing in the game were Greats such as Bryan Trottier, Billy Smith and Dave Ellett. Don’t miss next year’s Oldtimers Hockey Challenge to be held November 2011.

The Fort Macleod & District Health Foundation donate $12,000 to the new Cancer Clinic in Lethbridge

Proceeds from the Fort Macleod & District Health Foundation's 2009 Oktoberfest were raised for the purpose of enhancing Patient Comforts at the Cancer Clinic in Lethbridge. This was the chosen recipient due to the close proximity to the many residents of Fort Macleod and District who are able to access needed treatment at this centre. The amount raised last year was $12,000. This money was presented on behalf of the Fort Macleod & District Health Foundation by Susan Koots , Chairman of the Foundation Board. The Oktoberfest has become an annual event, with the third annual being held October 2, 2010. This event is held at the Fort Macleod Community Hall. Tickets are $50 per person and include a gourmet dinner by LA Chefs, as well as an auction and dance to Trevor Panczak & Roughstock. 2010 Proceeds will be directed to Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Room upgrades in Fort Macleod.

Order of the Eastern Star Maple Leaf Chapter #7 Donates to the Paediatrics Department

Local Eastern Star Chapters select their own charities and places of service in their own communities. One of the charities the local Maple Leaf Chapter supports is the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation. Representatives from the Order of the Eastern Star present Maria Malcolm, Child Life Specialist from the Paediatrics unit, with a $2,500 gift to purchase a new DVD/TV unit for the patients and 6 new specialized chairs for the CAMP program. The West Lethbridge Lions Club is part of a service organization Lions Clubs International. Their Motto is "We Serve". The Club wanted to do something special for the community and all southern Albertans. In support of a very worthwhile project Lion members Cathy Anderson and Sharon West presented Debra Ramage, Executive Director of the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation a cheque for $5000.00 This donation will be used for the development of the Healing Gardens planned in conjunction with the new Radiation Unit at the Chinook Regional Hospital. The West Lethbridge Lions Club's hope is that those using the gardens will be able to find some peace and tranquility.

The funds were raised at the club’s annual Ladies Night Out in April. The donation will go towards enhancing patient experience, (ie) comfortable furnishings, artwork, healing garden and future equipment needs. Grandview Village residents shave heads and raise funds for Lethbridge Cancer Centre

Grandview Village residents Glen Perrault and Joan Pierzchala shaved their heads and raised over $3,300 for the new Lethbridge Cancer Centre. The Grandview Village condo residents wanted to give money to the local radiation therapy unit, many having a personal experience with a loved one having to travel to Calgary for treatment. The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation would like to thank all the residents of Grandview Village, and especially Glen Perrault and Joan Pierzchala, who willingly sacrificed their hair, and Joe Thompson, and Miriam Thompson for their support and we love your new summer haircuts!

Annual Runners Sole Ladiesfest raises awareness for the Breast and Cervical Health Program at Chinook Regional Hospital

Saturday, June 12th 2010 marked the 10th annual Runners Soul Ladiesfest 8K. The popular event, which is an 8K run or walk for women only, is done in support of the Alberta Health Services Breast and Cervical Health Program at the Chinook Regional Hospital. The Ladiesfest attracts a variety of participants from competitive runners to mother daughter and sister teams, sometimes spanning several generations. It is a great opportunity for women to get active together and they are rewarded for their efforts as they cross the finish line with chocolates from Bernard Callebaut and roses from Marquis Flowers. We look forward to seeing everyone next year at the 11th annual Ladiesfest, Saturday June 11th 2011!

ATB Financial Lethbridge Market Place purchased a Christmas tree, decorated it and held a raffle to raise money to support the CRH Foundation. Through the efforts of an eight person fundraising committee along with the support of ATB associates in selling raffle tickets, the raffle raised $756 toward the cause. Further support was added when Rob Smith ATB Financial South Region Vice-President, topped up the raffle earnings with an additional $744, enabling ATB Finacial to present a cheque for $1,500 to the CRH Foundation.

Christmas Tree Festival Gala a Huge Success!

The 2008 Christmas Tree Festival Gala and Auction was once again a huge success for the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation. 40 beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and garlands were auctioned off in fine style by Bob Balog, of Balog Auction Services. Each of the items up for auction were sponsored by individuals and organizations and all decorations were donated by the many talented decorating teams.

Having a bath or shower can be therapeutic and it's the most pleasurable way to take care of personal hygiene. Now, GARU Unit 5A, Geriatric Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit, has a brand new deluxe tub that seniors and staff enjoy, thanks to the generosity of many donors to the Foundation's Telethon and Lights of Hope campaigns. Foundation Board members were given a chance to see the new tub Wednesday prior to their regular board meeting.

On Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 Costco presented a cheque to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation. This donation was part of the Care from the Heart Telethon and was raised through a variety of events held at the Lethbridge Costco location. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the residents of southern Alberta for their outstanding financial support of the 16th Annual Care from the Heart Telethon held this past Sunday. Donations and pledges exceeded $953,000, far surpassing the Foundation’s $800,000 goal. A significant portion of these proceeds will be directed to the $1.5 million i-Suite Project, for constructing and equipping two state-of-the-art operating rooms. Although we still have some ways to go toward the $1.5 million target, the funds received to date have given the health region the confidence to proceed with construction in July.

The 16th annual Care From the Heart Telethon airs live from the stage of the Yates Memorial Centre on SHAW TV channel 12 Sunday, April 29 from 11 am – 9 pm. The community is invited to come to the Yates during the day to take in wonderful entertainment, watch the live interviews and cheque presentations, and drop off their own donation to the hospital if they wish. More than 200 community volunteers have been organized to make the Telethon happen, including 70 phone operators, more than 150 live southern Alberta entertainers, and lots of backstage staff. John and Irene Frouws Donate $50,000 For Care from the Heart Telethon

John and Irene Frouws of Lethbridge have donated $50,000 to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation to enhance surgical services at the Chinook Regional Hospital through development of the i-Suite Project. Mr. Frouws, a City of Lethbridge employee for 38 years before retiring in 1976 as transit superintendent, says the donation is his way of “giving something back to the community which has been very good to him and his family.” Mr. Frouws and his wife Irene, who has been receiving nursing home care the last few years, are long-time supporters of the Foundation, contributing each year to the annual Care from the Heart Telethon that runs Sunday, April 29.

Cor Van Raay Surprises Foundation With Second $100,000 Donation!

The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation was prepared and pleased to announce today a gift of $100,000 to launch the public phase of the i-Suite Project to create two highly advanced, high-tech surgical operating rooms. Cor Van Raay, a farmer and feedlot operator from Iron Springs, made the gift to help bring the i-Suite Project to the Chinook Regional Hospital as quickly as possible. But this morning, he did a lot more. Mr. Van Raay brought with him a second cheque, and to the delight of Foundation Board members, he made it out for another $100,000.

Centre Villiage Mall donates proceeds from Photos with Santa campaign

The wonderful staff of the Centre Village Mall decided to donate all earnings from their Photos with Santa campaign to the Foundation. Photos were taken free of charge through December but the public was asked to make a donation in any amount to the Foundation. The campaign ended up raising $4,382 which will benefit the Pediatrics unit at the hospital.

Order of Eastern Star Maple Leaf Chapter #7 Donates $2,000 for Integrated Operating Room Project

The Lethbridge Regional Hospital Foundation was the grateful recipient of a $2,000 donation recently, the result of many fundraising activities over several months by members the Order of the Eastern Star Maple Leaf Chapter #7. Cheryl Walburger of Magrath, Worthy Matron in 2006 and now Past Matron said members served many dinners and held bake sales to raise the funds in support of the Foundation's integrated operating room project.

Duck Toss totals fly high

The We Care Saves for Little Hearts Duck Toss event on Sat. Nov. 4 at the Hurricanes vs. Rebels game was a flying success. Nearly 1,900 ducks were tossed on to the ice during the second intermission. The event raised over $3,700 to support the NICU.

In the tribute message that follows, friend and former co-worker Ingrid Dawson writes, "This outstanding caregiver has been throughout the years an inspiration to our Nursing Staff, Physicians and Administration....".

Val Matteotti Italian Open Raises $65,000 for Medical Equipment

The 11th Annual Val Matteotti Italian Golf Open held Wednesday, August 9 at the Lethbridge Country Club raised more than $65,00. This brings the total raised by the tournament in its 11-years to $580,000. The funding has purchased medical equipment for the NICU, Emergency, Cardiac and Stroke programs, Surgery and Cancer Diagnostic Services at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital.

We Care Saves for Little Hearts campaign tops $10,000 in contributions to NICU

The first night of the Hurricanes playoff season began with a generous gift to the LRH Foundation on behalf of the We Care Saves for Little Hearts campaign. We Care Home Health Services donates one dollar to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit for every save a Hurricanes goalie makes during the regular season. The 2005/2006 save total turned into a big cheque for $2,093. The We Care Saves campaign has raised $10,523 to date since it began during the 2003/2004 season.

Moonlight Run tops $60,000 in contributions made to LRH Foundation

Through the cold winter night, through the wind and the snow, hundreds of dedicated runners crossed the finish line of the Moonlight Run on Saturday, March 18. The 19th annual run, organized by The Runner's Soul, is one of the biggest races in the province and has contributed more than $60,000 to the LRH Foundation over the years.

It was quite a sight to see some 800 ducks fly at the Lethbridge Hurricanes game Saturday as the Lethbridge Regional Hospital Foundation partnered with We Care Home Health Services to raise funds for the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Spectators purchased rubber ducks at $2 each and tossed them toward centre ice for a chance to win a $500 grand prize package.

New Gastroscopes From Italian Open Brighten Christmas for Day Procedures Staff

Two new gastroscopes arrived just in time for Christmas at the Day Procedures Department at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital. The two scopes, costing about $35,000 each, were purchased with funds raised at the 2005 Val Matteotti Italian Open Golf Tournament August 10.

Auxiliary Lights of Hope Appeal Underway

Ladies of the Auxiliary to the Lethbridge Regional Hospital were on hand Tuesday, Nov. 15 to launch their 11th Annual Lights of Hope campaign. The Auxiliary, in partnership with the LRH Foundation, hopes the community will respond positively to the campaign and raise at least $140,000 for medical equipment, including an anesthetic machine with cardiac monitor for the new operating room at LRH.

Community Savings Donates $37,500 For Sick Kids at LRH

THe LRH Atrium was transformed into a busy quilting bee as volunteers gathered for a special LDS Community Service Day. Lethbridge Stake members pieced and sewed quilts throughout the morning for numerous charities in Lethbridge, including the LRH.

Annual Teddy Bear Run donates dozens of toys to children in hospital

The roar of Harleys could be heard from blocks away as the 7th Annual Teddy Bear Run made its way to the LHR on Sunday morning. Maria Malcolm, child life specialist for the CHR, and her volunteers waited anxiously in the north parking lot as dozens of shiny bikes pulled up, decorated with stuffed toys of every shape and size.

Foundation mourns board member passing

The staff and board members of the LRH Foundation are saddened by the news of the passing of Mary Robison on Saturday, May 28, 2005. Mary served on the LRH Foundation board for eight years, which included a big involvement in raising funds for the MRI campaign.

Knitting Time Back-to-Back Wool Challenge raises $892 for Breast Health Program

The international Back-to-Back Wool Challenge took place on Saturday, May 14 in Centre Village Mall and challenged two 8-person teams to see how fast they could blade sheer a sheep, spin the wool, and knit a full sweater. The event raised $892 for the Breast Health Program at the LRH.

Vicki Cavanagh Wins $1,377.50 in new CHR 50/50 Pay Day Lotto

Hurricanes Goalie issues fundraising challenge

Hurricanes goalie Aaron Sorochan has issued a fundraising challenge to all locals in support of the LRH Foundation’s upcoming Care From the Heart Telethon. Aaron has pledged $139, one dollar for each goal he let in over the past season.

$500 Telethon Challenge Issued by Wesbridge Construction Petite Lynx

Violet Gall Takes Pride In Donation of Therapeutic Bed

Mrs. Violet Gal was proud to visit the hospital recently and see the new thereapeutic bed she has donated for the palliative care and medical patients at LRH. The bed has an air-cushioned mattress, raises and lowers at the push of a button, as well as many new features for the ease and comfort of both patient and staff.

Palliative Care Team Says Thanks For Donation

The LRH Foundation's Finance committee ensures that the valued contributions by donors are used in keeping with their wishes and for equipment and programs that will enhance care. The Palliative Care Team recently wrote the Foundation the following note to express their gratitude for a funding allocation to buy Oximeters that measure oxygen levels in the blood.

ENMAX Suite Auction rasies $1,200 for the LRH Foundation

A $1,200 cheque was presented to the LRH Foundation from ENMAX Corporation and local radio stations Country 95.5 and B-93. An ENMAX Suite was auctioned live on-air during the Country 95 and B-93 morning shows to raise funds for the Foundation.

Odd Fellows Add $10,000 To Eye Care Fund

A $10,000 gift was received in late December from the Odd Fellow Rebekah Visual Research Foundation of Alberta. The gift will be added to a $30,000 endowment fund started at the hospital in 1995.

More than 30 shiny motorbikes roared up to the front entrance of the LRH with Santa leading the way. The Prairie Wind Riders motorcycle club, led by Bruce Mathieu (Santa), delivered a $3,500 cheque along with armfuls of new toys for the Pediatrics unit.

Order of the Royal Purple donates to the the Audiology department

Annual Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie campaign

Local Tim Horton’s stores and the LRH Foundation sold a lot of smiles this summer during the annual Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie campaign. The delicious jumbo chocolate chip cookies were sold for $2 each during a week in June and raised $3015 for the LRH Foundation.
